Blackhawk Down!
Well, actually it was a red-tailed hawk. Two weeks ago, I was out of town on business and Heidi called me to tell me they’d acquired a hawk. She was headed out to town and just a few yards down the dirt road she saw a hawk flopping around on the side of the road. It appeared to have been hit by a car. She went back and got our son Eli, some leather gloves, and a baby blanket. The two of them caught it and took it back to the house.

We have a big chain-link dog kennel that we use to quarantine sick animals, so they put it in there and called the game warden.

We expected that it would have internal injuries and probably would die, but at least it would die in peace, with fresh water and safety rather than the predator becoming prey for a raccoon or possum. It defied our expectations, though, and survived – at least as far as we know. Two days later we handed it off to the game warden who took it to a lady in Lampasas who volunteers for a raptor rescue organization out ofSan Antonio . We’ll check this week and see how he/she did.
